The Medical community and, indeed, the Maltese community have recently lost two great champions in differing fields of medicine.
Prof Albert Fenech was a founder and driving force in the modernization of adult Cardiology services in Malta. After a stint in the UK, Professor Fenech returned to Malta around 30 years ago and was instrumental in the development of this critical specialty, including the introduction of non-surgical interventional techniques. Known for his excellent humour and exemplary bedside manner, he was a quintessential gentleman physician with the ‘human touch’.
Dr Victor Calvagna was the first to be appointed consultant Paediatric oncologist in Malta, and developed this specialty into a fully integrated domain with excellent facilities over the past 25 years or so. Victor was completely dedicated to his patients, whilst remaining the ultimate athlete and active sportsman, where he also excelled. He led by example and, despite numerous achievements, he remained forever approachable, down-to-earth and humble.
Both Albert and Victor will be sorely missed, and the MRC would like to express its sincere condolences to loved ones, family, friends and colleagues of these two giants of Maltese Medicine.
